Something I painted intending to sell or feature at KPAC, won 2nd place in the art contest. I have a full, free table to myself next year. Huzzah. :3

Derwent watercolor pencils over pencil sketch.

Please comment if you like it, any feedback would be great. :3

[Edit] Tweaked the saturation and lightened the colors a bit, hope it looks better.

First of all, I would like to thank the artist of this piece for submitting their work to the group I founded called #WatercolorArtists. I would also like to start with the technique rating in my analysis of this piece. I find it phenomenal for someone who is working with watercolor pencils. I absolutely love the look of the leaves and the few water droplets that are on them. Transparent water droplets are difficult to achieve in any medium and this artist has done them beautifully in watercolor. I gave them 4.5 stars for technique because the only thing I would have done differently is using a bit more pressure when I colored with my pencils so that when I added the water, the colors of the piece would appear darker and more vibrant. However, as one person commented on this piece, the lighter colors would work nicely for a Light Raticate card, so it really comes down to the personal preference of the person who is viewing the artwork. Secondly, for the originality rating, I'd say that this deserves high marks because as a former Pokémon fan (I was a diehard fan when I was coming up in the 1990s), I can testify to the fact that Raticate is usually displayed as a mean and aggressive rat with sharp teeth who is used mainly for battling, but here we have one who seems almost sweet and who is caring for her babies, the Rattatas. I gave the artist 4.5 stars for originality because of this and the only reason I took off half a point is because of the fact that fan art itself is always unoriginal simply because it was already thought up by another person. For the impact, I again gave the artist high marks because seeing as how I am no longer a Pokémon fan, it takes a lot to hold my attention on the subject. The leaves originally drew my artist's eye to the piece and then the rest of the painting and the original idea of a mother Raticate kept it there, so I have given this artist 5 stars for impact. Finally, for the vision, the artist has said in the comments below her piece that she likes to draw Pokémon in different situations and environments in order to bring a little more life to the Pokémon world. That is all I need to hear. They receive 5 stars for vision. All in all, this is great work. Good job!

This is so heart-warming. Often, one thinks that Raticate is a scary and intimidating pokemon but we always seem to forget that they are the parents of little Rattata www. The watercolouring gives it a story-book feeling. Eum, I am inclined to believe that this must look nicer in person (scans seldom do watercolour works justice...I-I find at least).

Yeah, the edges of the paint are a lot lighter and more subtle in the original. The scan made all the light greens darker and more pronounced for some reason so the background looks kind of gross. x.O

But thank you, I did kind of want a storybook feel, so I'm glad that came through. ^.^
